Privacy Policy
Rocket Labs LLC ("Rocket Labs," "we," "us," or "our") makes Spell a Bee, a spelling game designed for children. We built Spell a Bee to be safe and age-appropriate, and we designed it to collect as little information as possible. This policy explains what information the app does and does not handle, and is intended to comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act ("COPPA") and Apple's Kids Category requirements.
A Note for Parents
Spell a Bee is made for kids. It contains no third-party advertising, no behavioral or targeted advertising, no social-media or chat features, and no links out of the app except inside a parent-gated area. We do not sell or share children's information, and we do not build advertising profiles of children.
Information Stored Only on the Device
The following stays on the child's device and is never transmitted to us:
- Name or nickname: The app lets a child enter a first name or nickname to personalize the experience. It is saved only on the device.
- Learning progress: Levels, streaks, coins, purchased in-app items, and settings are stored locally on the device.
Deleting the app removes this on-device information.
Microphone and Speech
Spell a Bee offers a spell-by-voice mode. With permission, the app uses the microphone and on-device speech recognition to understand the letters a child says so it can check the spelling. This audio is processed on the device. We do not record, store, or transmit the audio, and the spell-by-voice feature is optional.
Anonymized Usage Analytics
To understand how the app is used and to improve it, we may collect anonymized, non-personal usage information, such as which levels are played, streaks, and whether a feature was used. This is limited to our own systems and handled as follows:
- It uses a random, app-generated identifier that is not the device's advertising identifier (IDFA), the vendor identifier (IDFV), or any identifier tied to a person.
- It contains no personal information. No name, email, address, photos, contacts, or precise location.
- It is used solely to support the internal operation and improvement of Spell a Bee. It is not used for advertising, and it is not used to track children across other apps, websites, or services.
- It is not sold or shared with third parties for their own purposes. Spell a Bee does not use third-party analytics or third-party advertising software.
Purchases
Spell a Bee offers an optional subscription. Purchases are handled entirely by Apple through the App Store, and are placed behind a parental gate. We never receive or store payment or credit-card information.
How We Use Information
We use the limited information described above only to provide, maintain, and improve Spell a Bee. We do not use it to contact children, to advertise, or to build user profiles.
Children's Privacy (COPPA)
Spell a Bee is intended for children, and we take care to protect their privacy. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. The app is designed so that the information a child enters (such as a nickname) stays on the device, and the only information that reaches us is anonymized usage data that does not identify the child. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, or you have any questions or concerns, please contact us using the details below and we will address it promptly.
Parental Rights and Choices
You can, at any time:
- Review or remove on-device information by editing it in the app or deleting the app.
- Turn optional features such as the microphone or reminder notifications on or off in device Settings or the parent area.
- Contact us to ask about, or request deletion of, any information relating to your child.
Data Retention
On-device information remains until the child or parent removes it or deletes the app. Anonymized usage data is retained for a limited period and is not linked to any individual.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the updated policy on this page and revise the effective date above.
